Opinion: Vermont’s utilities need to clean up after themselves
Your editorial of July 31, “Is this the image to portray?” brings to mind other eyesores that despoil scenic Vermont.
I am thinking of the many instances where the public utilities have failed to finish a project, leaving us with multiple utility poles despoiling the view for all. I recognize the importance of upgrading our public utilities, whether it be power, telephone or cable. But, one would hope that the utilities could coordinate their work, finish the project and remove unneeded poles.
There is one particularly glaring example (see photo) on Route 7 between Vergennes and New Haven where, apparently, the power utility installed new poles and wires, but the other utilities have yet to move their lines and remove the unneeded poles. So we are left with a mess of poles and wires. Sadly this is not the only example of unfinished utility projects.
Maybe a way can be found to encourage the appropriate state agency to put some pressure on the utilities to clean up their act. How we look is important to the economic and cultural health of Vermont.
