Panther runners vie at NCAAs

MASON, Ohio — The Middlebury College women’s cross-country team was sixth and the men were 13th, each in 32-team fields, at the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday hosted by Wilmington College in Mason, Ohio. 
In the women’s race, seniors Alison Maxwell and Summer Spillane were Middlebury’s top two finishers. Maxwell, the NESCAC champion, placed 33rd overall in 22:25.1 over the 6K course, and Spillane was 35th in 22:27.3. Next for the Panthers was junior Adrian Walsh in 65th place (22:57.2), followed by senior Katie Carlson in 74th (23:03.5.)
Placing 88th was junior Caroline Guiot in 23:09.1, followed by junior Olivia Artaiz in 165th (23:40.8) and sophomore Erzie Nagy in 263rd (24:54.4).
The overall women’s champion was Amy Regan of Stevens Institute, who ran 20:51.9.
The Panthers were the top NESCAC team. Johns Hopkins won its third consecutive NCAA women’s title after placing five runners in the top 30.
MEN’S RESULTS
Senior Kevin Wood was Middlebury’s top finisher among the men, placing 34th with a time of 24:36.7 over 8 km. Senior Wilder Schaaf was next for the Panthers with a 40th-place effort in 24:44.2. Junior Sebastian Matt crossed the line in 109th in 25:25.7, followed by junior Sam Cartwright in 171st (25:44.2).
Senior Jacob Fox came in 193rd (25:52.8), sophomore Brian Rich was 232nd (26:12.1), and freshman Ascencion Aispuro was 279th (27:54.8).
North Central won the men’s title.
