Athletes from CVU, Fairfax honored by sports media

VERMONT — The Vermont Sports Media Association has selected Champlain Valley Union High School senior Paige Dubrul and BFA-Fairfax senior Matt Larose as its November Athletes of the Month.
In statewide balloting of VSMA members, Dubrul, a soccer player, was named the November Female Athlete of the Month, and Larose, a football player, was named the November Male Athlete of the Month.
Dubrul and Larose, both seniors, were first nominated by a VSMA member based on their accomplishments in November.
Dubrul, a two-way midfielder, helped her Redhawk girls’ soccer team earn the 2014 Division I state championship and was named the Burlington Free Press Girls’ Soccer Player of the Year in November. In her four years playing for CVU, the Redhawks won four state titles.
“Paige was the pivot of our team,”’ said CVU coach Stan Williams. “She served as a defensive rock in front of our back four and then had the technical and tactical ability to start our attack. She was instrumental in our success.”
Also nominated for the female November honor was Proctor High School junior soccer player Abby McKearin.
Larose was a driving force in the Bullets’ first-ever football title, gaining 304 yards on 24 carries (12.7-yard average) in the Bullets’ Division III championship win over top-seeded Otter Valley. In the game, Larose bolted for touchdown runs of 6, 67 and 92 yards. He also had one of BFA’s two scores in its semifinal win against Mt. Abraham, a 36-yard run that was the longest ground gain of the day.
Larose outpolled two other nominees for the November male honor, Rice Memorial senior football player Chris Jansen and Stowe senior soccer player Blake Duffy.
More information about the VSMA is available from organization president Josh Kaufmann of the St. Albans Messenger at [email protected].
