Panther skiing fourth at Dartmouth carnival

HANOVER, N.H. — The Middlebury College ski team took fourth in this past weekend’s Dartmouth Winter Carnival with 695 points. UVM won with 926, followed by the Dartmouth (841) and New Hampshire (791). Alpine events took place at the Dartmouth Skiway, while Nordic events were contested at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center.
The Panthers host their own carnival this Friday and Saturday at the Middlebury Snow Bowl and the Rikert Ski Touring Center.
On Friday, Robert Cone settled for second place after three consecutive wins in the giant slalom, finishing just 0.19 out of first in 1:54.77. Christopher McKenna placed seventh in 1:55.81, while Ghassan Gedeon Achi earned a season-best ninth-place finish (1:56.52) as the Panthers took second in the event.
On Saturday, Cone earned second-place in the slalom race in 1:37.97 as the Panthers placed second. McKenna turned in an eighth-place effort in 1:39, followed by Gedeon Achi in 16th (1:39.99).
In Saturday’s women’s GS, Elle Gilbert led the group with a season-best 11th-place finish in 2:00.37, while Kara Shaw finished 12th in 2:00.63. Mary Sackbauer followed in 14th in 2:01.26.
Friday’s slalom saw Gilbert pace the Panthers in 18th place in 1:50.30. Next was Katy Green in 26th (1:53.85), followed by Yina Moe-Lange in 31st (1:54.69).
Heather Mooney led the women’s Nordic team on both days and won the classic sprint on Friday. Kelsey Phinney placed fourth, while Nicolette Amber was 14th. In Saturday’s the 10K freestyle event, Mooney took second in 30:51. Phinney turned in a seventh-place finish in 31:54, followed by Amber in 23rd (33:24).
The men’s sprint race saw Patrick McElravey take seventh to lead Middlebury, while Adam Luban and Jack Steele also scored for the Panthers. On Saturday, McElravey’s 20th-place finish led the team in the 10K freestyle in 27:43. Luban took home 23rd-place (27:55), while Jacob Volz was the team’s other scorer.
