City opera house lease up for a vote
VERGENNES — At their meeting on Tuesday, members of the Vergennes City Council dealt with a lawsuit against the planned toddler park (see story), and also:
• Set May 5 as the vote date for an amendment to the Vergennes Opera House lease with the city that would allow the theater to use two first-floor rooms that previously served as a holding cell and the chief of police’s office. That day will also see the second vote on a Vergennes Union High School budget proposal.
• Agreed to allow the Vergennes Farmers’ Market to close off Park Street on the late afternoon and evening of the Thursday before Vergennes Day. Farmers’ market organizers plan to hold a community dinner.
• Discussed sewer system issues with Meigs Road resident Stanley Hotte. Aldermen will at least look into replacing a patchwork of private lines with a city sewer main on the road, they said.
• Met behind closed doors again to discuss buying land along the east side of Otter Creek from Mayor Bill Benton and his sister.
