Learn about shelter belt plantings in New Haven

NEW HAVEN — Meghan Giroux, owner and director of Vermont Edible Landscapes, will present “Creating a Shelter Belt” at the New Haven Town Office on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m. The event is part of the New Haven Conservation Commission’s Armchair Naturalist Series.
Planted as early as the 1930s, shelter belt plantings serve multiple functions, such as erosion control; protection of crops and livestock; odor control for manure pits, lagoons and swine operations; and as edible hedges. Giroux will talk about how to plan, plant and maintain shelter belt plantings, and will discuss their sustainability.
Giroux is a native Vermonter with a passion for her home state. She works alongside landowners and farmers to protect and enhance their natural resources. Her business is solely focused on growing perennial plants that sequester carbon and produce food, fodder or medicine.
The Armchair Naturalist Speaker Series is held in the fall and winter. Admission is free. For more information, email [email protected].
