Champs swim to victory in first meet

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Champs kicked off their 2016 Champlain Valley Swim League season on June 30 by swamping visiting Winooski, 318-104.
Seven Vergennes swimmers won multiple individual races in their opener, led by Anna Rakowski, who swept all four 12-and-under girls’ events.
Will Clark, Nathan Viera and Jacob Viera touched the wall first in three races apiece, while Calder Rakowski, Noah Engvall and Adam Clark won three each.
The Champs also won six of seven contested medley relays and five of the eight freestyle relays.
The Champs were hosting Winooski because that town’s pool is closed for repairs this summer. Vergennes had been set to entertain The Edge swim team on June 28, but because of thunderstorms in the area that meet was moved to July 26.
Next up for the Champs are two more home meets, vs. Burlington Tennis Club on July 7 and St. Albans on July 12.
