Notes of appreciation: Addison County’s Humane Society is so good

I am writing to sing the praises of Homeward Bound, Addison County’s Humane Society, for the essential role they play in our community. Last year alone, they came to the aid of 934 animals — a record for them. Not only were they able to serve every single Addison County animal who arrived at the Middlebury shelter in need of care, they were also ready, willing and able to take in an additional 200 animals from high volume shelters beyond our state lines. Without question, caring for Addison County’s animals remains, and shall remain, Homeward Bound’s top priority.
But isn’t it wonderful that when one or more of their kennels sit empty, they jump to fill it with an animal or animals whose lives are in jeopardy in states absent the resources we have here in Vermont? So many lives are thus being saved by their simple willingness to reach out beyond our own county lines. I feel privileged to be both a volunteer and supporter of such a community treasure, and am delighted to say that my adopted kitty, Gus, is an HB alum.
In addition to the above, and likely just for starters, Homeward Bound is also tasked with addressing animal cruelty, cat overpopulation, reuniting lost pets with their families, educating kids about the humane treatment of animals, coming to the aid of pet owners in crisis, etc. Daily, they change the lives of homeless animals for the better, and in the process are able to bring great joy to the individuals and families who adopt them. What an unbeatable combination for Addison County and beyond.
