Brandon man recalls his father in his 1928 Willys Whippet
I was also born in May 1928. Seen here is my foster grandfather Jonas Birchard standing beside his Whippet sedan, which was also a vintage 1928.
There were only 500 Whippet cars manufactured by the Willys company back then. The car was only geared up to do 55 mph. Notice the wooden spokes in the wheels of the tires.
The photo was taken at East Shoreham Railroad Station. I think the tall man beside Jonas Birchard is Gene Platt, the station agent.
Our father, William Rouse, drove this car several times with my brother Charlie Rouse and myself at different times, too. I remember coming to Brandon years ago to shop at variety stores.
Editor’s note: Sanford Rouse is a Brandon resident.
