Letters to the Editor: Local resident offers views on Ferrisburgh tree cutting
Andy Kirkaldy’s article in the June 26 edition concerning the tree-cutting case in Ferrisburgh presented only the farmer’s comments and point of view. At the Ferrisburgh selectboard meeting mentioned in the article, several residents spoke up to express their extreme distress at the cutting of thousands of trees in Ferrisburgh and Panton.
It was clear that we are concerned about the health of Lake Champlain. The tree cutting destroyed the buffer to prevent run-off into the lake, which is only a few hundred feet from the devastation. The farmers know very well that best farming practices call for significant tree/shrub buffers to protect the lake.
The other main concern is the beauty of our towns. The towns had been a lovely combination of productive farmland and woods with tree-shaded roads. Most of Arnold Bay Road and Adam’s Ferry Road are no longer tree-shaded. The farmers profess to think that neighbors will be more satisfied with the stumps gone and ditches in place of the trees. How ridiculous! We want trees!
