Letters to the Editor: Proposed Ilsley Library project should be scaled back

Let me add my support to Janine McDonald’s letter about the proposed renovation of the Ilsley Library.
I accept that there is need for updating and remodeling parts of this old building, but the planned budget of almost $10 million seems to include some unnecessarily “great things” and it would surely be better to scale back both the changes and the cost? I agree with Ms. McDonald that bigger is not necessarily better. Of course, I admit I’m biased — I appreciate books, not technology.
I am very fearful that when/if all these plans come to pass, in the process we will have lost the lovely garden behind the library, which I imagine is a source of pleasure for many people as well as me, not to mention bees and butterflies. I stop in often and admire the abundance and variety of beautiful flowers.
Also, I have to support Ann Pomainville’s letter about the monster tractor company vs. local businesses that sell the same things. I moved here from a huge city (Los Angeles) and deeply appreciate now living somewhere with a different perspective on how things are done.
Finally, am I the only reader who, when looking at the photo of Kathleen Haughey on the front page (Sept. 14) thought I was looking at the Mona Lisa?
