ADDISON COUNTY — The No. 12 Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team advanced in the Division III tournament on Tuesday, while No. 15 Otter Valley came up short.
In Wednesday action after the deadline for this paper Mount Abraham, at 10-4 the No. 4 seed in D-II, was set to host No. 13 Lake Region (3-11). If the Eagles avoided the upset they would most likely host No. 5 Harwood (11-3) on Saturday at 10 a.m.
Also on Wednesday afternoon, the 7-7 Middlebury girls, the No. 9 seed in D-I, were set to visit No. 8 North Country (7-7). A win would mean the Tigers will visit No. 1 Champlain Valley on Saturday at 1 p.m.
COMMODORES
The Commodores coasted past No. 5 BFA-Fairfax, 5-1, after getting an early spark from two Sydney Weber goals. Kaitlyn Brace added a pair of goals, and Munro McLaren also found the net for VUHS, which got eight saves from goalie Anya Sonwaldt. Goalie Bri Mossey stopped 10 shots for the 10-4-1 Bullets.
The VUHS coaches were pleased with the performance of the Commodores, who are playing without three-year starting central midfielder Emily Rooney, who will also miss the basketball season with an injured knee. “The girls played a great game,” said Co-coach Peter Maneen.
The 5-10 Commodores will next face No. 4 Rivendell (13-1-1) on Friday at 3 p.m.
OTTERS
Also in D-III on Tuesday No. 2 Thetford blanked OV, 5-0. Five Thetford players scored as their team improved to 12-2. OV goalie Gabby Poalino made nine saves. The Otters had won three of their past four games, all by shutout, and finished at 5-9-1. “OV showed real growth this season,” said Coach Rick Hedding.
