Lake Champlain to be the topic at Audubon society’s annual meeting

MIDDLEBURY — The Otter Creek Audubon Annual Dinner will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, in Middlebury at the American Legion. The social hour will start at 5:15 and dinner will be at 6:00. The public is welcome to attend the talk at no charge by our featured speaker, Mike Winslow, which will start at 7:45.
Mike’s talk is entitled, “Lake Champlain: How We Got Here.” Mike draws on fifteen years of experience working with the non-profit environmental advocacy group the Lake Champlain Committee. He currently chairs the Technical Advisory Committee to the Lake Champlain Basin Program, and is the author of the book “Lake Champlain: A Natural History.”
This is a timely topic as reports of algae blooms and government programs to prevent pollution have put Lake Champlain on the map. Mike’s talk will focus on the background that led to the present condition. He will discuss six key factors that led to the current state of the lake. Some are beyond our control, like the glacial history of the lake, while others, like how we use the land, can be managed. In order to know which government programs achieve the most ecological gains we need a clear understanding of what causes the conditions we are trying to change.
The lasagna dinner costs $18.50 for adults and $12.50 for youth. For reservations and walk-in availability, call Sue Rasmussen, at 802-897-5411. More information can be found on the OCAS website, ottercreekaudubon.org.
