College to host international trade symposium Nov. 10
MIDDLEBURY — On the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 10, Middlebury College’s Program in International Politics and Economics will convene a symposium on “The United States and Global Trade: Winners, Losers and the Way Forward.”
The public is invited to come hear three guest speakers address different aspects of the symposium’s general theme, which is now so central to our national politics.
Doug Irwin, an economic historian from Dartmouth College, will discuss reoccurring waves of protectionism and economic populism throughout U.S. history. His talk is at 1 p.m. Then at 2:15 p.m., Edward Mansfield, a political scientist at the University of Pennsylvania, will survey the American electorate’s evolving attitudes toward trade over the past generation.
Yale School of Management’s Peter Schott will wrap things up at 3:30 p.m. when he addresses the impact of China’s accession to the World Trade Organization on the U.S. manufacturing sector.
The venue for the symposium is the Robert A. Jones House Seminar Room at 148 Hillcrest Road.
Light refreshments will be served.
