Vergennes Police Log: City police cite three for impaired driving

VERGENNES — Vergennes police said they cited three drivers into court for impaired driving this past weekend, two for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and one for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs.
On Sunday, Dec. 17, city police cited Melissa Henderson, 43, of Middlebury for DUI-alcohol. Police said they stopped her car for allegedly failing to honor the stop sign at New Haven Road and Route 7, and allege her blood-alcohol level tested at 0.170; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.
On Saturday, Dec. 16, they cited Justin R. Basset, 41, of Vergennes for DUI-alcohol. Police said they pulled over his car for allegedly failing to honor the stop sign at North and Main streets, and allege his blood-alcohol level tested at 0.125.
Also on Saturday city police cited Sarah Carr, 38, of Essex for DUI-drugs. Police allege they smelled marijuana and noticed signs of impairment after stopping her vehicle for speeding on Main Street; police said they took a blood sample only after obtaining a warrant at Carr’s request.
Between Dec. 11 and 17 police also ticketed and ordered towed two cars during last week’s snowstorm for violating the city wintertime ban on overnight parking on city streets. They ticketed four cars during other nights.
During those seven days, city police also:
•  On Dec. 11 looked into an attempted break-in at Kennedy Brothers; police said a back door showed evidence of an attempted forced entry.
•  On Dec. 11 attempted to serve an abuse-prevention order to a city resident, but could not find him.
•  On Dec. 12 dealt with a fender-bender in the Vergennes Union High School parking lot.
•  On Dec. 12 responded to a minor one-car accident at the junction of King and Green streets.
•  On Dec. 13 began looking into a fraud complaint involving two local banks.
•  On Dec. 13 helped a motorist get into a locked car on Main Street.
•  On Dec. 13 while returning from a conference helped out the scene of a major four-vehicle accident on Route 125 in Ripton.
•  On Dec. 14 checked out a complaint about barking dogs on Battery Hill but found no problem.
•  On Dec. 15 directed traffic around a disabled truck on Main Street.
•  On Dec. 16 helped push a disabled car off West Main Street.
