Book editing for beginners; learn how at session in city

VERGENNES — The dust of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) has settled and the manuscript is done. Or maybe a manuscript has been moldering in a desk drawer for months. What’s next? That great novel, telling memoir, or riveting biography probably needs work. Honestly, it definitely needs work. But revision can be daunting — there’s too much to fix, too many distractions, and too little motivation to get started. Never fear, Keith Morrill, owner of Little City Editing, will be offering a workshop titled “Book Editing for Beginners” on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the Bixby Memorial Free Library.
In this NaNoWriMo post-op workshop, participants will learn and practice strategies, technique, and approaches for editing their own writing and the writing for others, so come ready to work. Exact topics of discussion will depend on the needs of participants, but might include examining theme, evaluating and developing narrative elements, and performing line and copy editing.
Morrill is a Vermont writer, editor, and educator. He is a copyeditor for the Hugo-nominated “Strange Horizons” and senior editor for “Zig Zag Lit Mag.” He holds a bachelor’s in English and classics and a master’s in teaching both from the University of Vermont, and a certificate in copyediting from the University of California, San Diego. Learn more about Morril and his ventures at littlecityediting.com.
Though this workshop is intended for writers who have completed at least a rough draft of a book-length manuscript (ideally fiction or creative non-fiction), anyone is welcome to attend.
Register for the workshop by contacting Muir Haman at [email protected] or calling 802-877-2211.
