Letter to the editor: Be very wary of computer scams
Don’t let this happen to you:
The other day I was working on the computer and suddenly a red banner appeared across the screen saying that my computer had been hacked and that I had to call this number to get help reestablish protection. I had not experienced this sort of thing before and believed it and called the number. The person answering the phone asked for over $300 for re-establishing protection and I had to use my Visa card now while he was on the phone. The Visa people got involved since it was a large amount to be transferred to China. When I heard the word China I finally came to my senses, hung up the phone and cancelled the transaction and had the Visa card number blocked.
Do not let someone talk you into sending money or into giving your Visa card number.
Let a local computer expert fix any problems.
Start by hanging up and turning off your computer. If it still has a problem when you turn it back on, take it to a local repair place.
