Letter to the editor: 2015 study makes a powerful case for gun control

Regarding your excellent March 19 editorial, “Gun control: Facts vs. fiction.” The “2015 study” you cite makes a powerful case for gun control, showing that states with stronger controls have substantially fewer gun deaths than those with weak controls.
This is the best ammunition I’ve seen so far to refute the National Rifle Association’s nonsense that the best response to gun violence is more guns in the hands of more people.
But you didn’t tell your readers who conducted this important study. Please provide this essential bit of information, as I would like to order the full report if possible.

Editor’s note: The 2015 study was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. One of the lead authors was Elinor Kaufman, MD, at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. The full study was published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Many reports cite this study, which breaks down the data county by county in the 48 continental United States, though permission is need to gain access to the full study. Also, check out this magazine story from The Atlantic, which is the chart used for the editorial: “The states with the most gun laws see the fewest gun-related deaths, April 28, 2015.” See: tinyurl.com/ydyhr74q.
