Lincoln students to present ‘We Have a Voice’ Thursday

LINCOLN — Fifth- and sixth-graders at Lincoln Community School will give two performances of the original production “We Have a Voice” this Thursday, May 10.
The musical production is set in present day and 1910, is written by fifth- and sixth-grade students and focuses on how one man, Lewis Hine, along with the National Child Labor Committee, created public awareness to help end child labor in America. In 1938, Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, which included new regulations on child labor.
Fifth- and sixth-grade Lincoln students spent this school year pondering the question: How have people throughout time created social change? They journeyed through rights and responsibilities of children, Vermont government, and the history of the Industrial Revolution and child labor in the United States. Students are currently working on their own positive change projects to make a difference in their own communities.
Through a grant from the Five Town Friends of the Arts and fundraising, performance artists and educators Grace Freeman and Helen Weston have directed this unique and heartfelt production.
There will be two performances on Thursday. The dress rehearsal (open to those who would like to attend a day performance) is at 1 p.m. The evening performance is at 6 p.m.
