Dear Homeward Bound…

Dear Homeward Bound,
I don’t know what to do! I just found out that my husband got transferred and we have to move next month. We have two really great cats that we love but we can’t take them with us to our new housing. What should I do?
Curious

Dear Curious,
We’re sorry to hear of your situation. Moving is hard to begin with and now you have the added stress of needing to find a new home for your kitties. There are several things you can do, but the first and most important one is to call your local humane society right away to make an appointment (close to when you have to leave) for them to take your kitties in. You can always cancel the appointment if you don’t need it, but having it “on the books” will provide you with peace of mind.
After that, you should try your circle of close friends and family (social media is great for this) to see if anyone is able to help you by taking the kitties. You can also make posters to deliver to local vets’ offices, pet supply stores, libraries, town offices, and other public places to help spread the word. Make a “resume” for your cats to describe what they are like, what their litter box habits are, what their medical history is and anything else you can think of. This will help potential families know if your kitties are right for them and help ensure the best match possible.
Good luck to you!
Homeward Bound

P.S. Maybe you could try sending the “resume” to the owners of your new housing? Maybe they will be so impressed by your cats and your initiative that they will change their mind.
