Eight seek open seat on Bristol selectboard

BRISTOL — At least eight Bristol residents have officially expressed an interest in filling the selectboard seat left vacant by Ted Lylis when he resigned on Sept. 2.
According to Bristol Town Administrator Valerie Capels, letters of intent have been received from Ian Albinson, Eric Carter, David Cobb, Andrea Denny, Brian Fox, Kevin Hanson, William Mount and Jim Quaglino.
Other citizens wishing to be considered for the appointment must notify the town, in writing, before the next selectboard meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. in the town office.
That evening the selectboard will interview the candidates and make an appointment.
The appointee will serve on the selectboard until March 3, 2020 — Town Meeting Day — unless residents call for a special election before then.
State law grants citizens the right to petition for a vote to replace whoever the selectboard appoints. To exercise that right, citizens must present to the town clerk a petition signed by 5 percent of Bristol’s legal voters.
In the event of a special election to fill the seat, the winner would remain in office for the entirety of Lylis’s unexpired term — through March 1, 2022.
If no special election is called, then the selectboard’s appointee would have to run for election on March 3, 2020, to keep their seat.
