Town Hall Theater offers links to entertainment

While COVID-19 is has closed performing arts venues around the world, it is providing them with the opportunity to get creative with providing arts programming to the public. Town Hall Theater in Middlebury is no exception. Thanks to the internet age, THT has been entertaining anyone with internet access with their Quarantine Sessions — short performances by THT favorites. Go to townhalltheater.org.
That is not the only thing, however. One look at their “What’s On?” listings and performing arts lovers will see a number of links to performances of opera, musicals, plays, music and dance.
This week, see a link to Middlebury Acting Company’s virtual world premiere of “St. Bernard, An Opioid Play” by Peter Espenshade and directed by Rebecca Strum, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29, via live stream.
For opera fans, there is a link to the Metropolitan Opera’s Nightly Met Opera streams. Each night a different opera is on view. The May 28 offering is the 2013 performance of Berlioz’s “Les Troyens” starring Deborah Voigt, Susan Graham, Bryan Hymel and Dwayne Croft, conducted by Fabio Luisi. Friday, May 29, brings the 2009 performance of Bellini’s “La Sonnambula” sung by Natalie Dessay and Juan Diego Flórez, conducted by Evelino Pidò, followed by Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” on May 30, and Strauss’s “Salome” by May 31.
THT also has a link to performances and workshops by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. As with the Met offerings, the Ailey has posted legendary performances, one on offer each week, as well as a “Revelations” workshop, videos of conversations with Ailey dancers, and more.
Viewers can also find the link to London’s National Theater, which is streaming performances every Thursday at 2 p.m., and Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Videos from the Vault.” Other links include a celebration of Steven Sondheim’s 90th birthday, Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, and bluesman Tom Caswell’s weekly blues jam sessions.
