Letter to the editor: Four council hopefuls touted

Dear fellow residents of Vergennes,
The field for our city’s Sept. 22 special City Council election is crowded, with 14 citizens running for four City Council seats. I am grateful to all 14 candidates for their willingness to serve and their desire to move our city forward in a positive direction.
Four candidates for City Council have identified a goal of making Vergennes welcoming to young people and families from diverse backgrounds: Huizenga, Small, Austin, and Murray-Killon. This goal is my goal and for that reason I will be voting for these four candidates.
I moved to Vergennes two decades ago to work and start a family because it was an affordable, walkable, safe, and friendly town with a ton of potential. New businesses were opening, the library and opera house were being restored, and the future of Vergennes was bright. I have never regretted the decision to move here. It has been a pleasure to make connections, serve on the school board, and raise my children in this town. I wish for more young people and families from diverse backgrounds to see the potential of Vergennes, put down roots, and come to love our little city. Inclusive and collaborative leaders will make that happen.
I urge every eligible voter to VOTE. Contact the City Clerk to request a mail-in ballot today or mark your calendar to vote in person. I hope you will join me in voting for Huizenga and Small (6- month terms) and Austin and Murray-Killon (18-month terms) in the Sept. 22 special City Council election.
My very best to you all.
Sue Rakowski
Vergennes
