Book review: Squeeze Me — by Carl Hiaasen

(Knopf Publishing Group)
Carl Hiaasen, author of more than 20 novels and long-time columnist based in Florida, is writing at the top of his game in his latest humorous crime caper, a hyper-current murder mystery involving senior Floridians, a massive python, and a presidential fan club, the Potussies. Angie Armstrong, ex-con turned wildlife relocation expert, is hired to discreetly remove an 18-foot unwelcome guest at an extremely posh private club on Palm Beach island, but when the snake becomes the “smoking gun,” a hilariously second-rate clean-up crew is hired, and their inept cover-up exposes even more absurdity than previously thought imaginable. And when POTUS finds out Kiki Pew Fitzsimmons, a valued member of his Palm Beach cadre is missing and foul play may be involved, his bungling attempts to bring attention to her case only foul up the situation even more. With laugh out loud lines, bitingly accurate descriptive passages, and a parade of Florida’s finest, this book is the balm we need, the distraction we deserve. His saber-edged political satire hits so perfectly, it’s as if this moment in time was crafted specifically for this author to make full use of it, and it was just the book this reader needed right now.
