Book review: House of Correction — by Nicci French

(William Morrow & Company)
Okeham, England: a small town where everyone knows everyone else’s business. Tabitha grew up here, and now has returned to her hometown, renovating a neglected house she had grown attached to as a child. However one gray day, a day Tabitha can scarcely remember, the builder who is helping with the project, makes a grisly discovery in the back shed—a dead body. Tabitha is arrested and processed with such haste, it’s not until she’s in lockup that the enormity of her situation dawns on her. Who did kill Stuart Lees? Was it Tabitha? Will her past heap suspicion on her or perhaps give her a reasonable way out of this predicament? When a supplied lawyer advises a course Tabitha can’t go along with, she opts for representing herself, and thus, we discover, alongside Tabitha, the case the prosecution has made. With an admirable take-charge attitude, Tabitha is given full access to every piece of evidence and all the witness testimonies, which she methodically catalogs and maps. If you enjoy a whodunit headed up by a slightly unreliable narrator who is also an amateur sleuth, this unsettling yet sharp suspense novel will be most enjoyable.
