City council to evaluate candidates for manager
VERGENNES — City offices have received resumes from 17 candidates seeking to become the next Vergennes City Manager, Interim Manager Renny Perry told the Vergennes City Council at its Tuesday meeting.
Most of those had applied through online job site Indeed, Perry said. He is forwarding their applications to the councilors, who are collectively serving as the hiring committee.
They will review the applications before a special meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 8. At that meeting councilors will evaluate the candidate pool and determine which applicants they should interview. Councilors also said they expect more applicants by then — the position is being advertised as “open until filled.”
To rate the candidates, councilors will be relying on scoring sheets that have been used regularly in recent years. The council mounted a lengthy search to replace longtime manager Mel Hawley that came up empty before then-Councilor Matt Chabot offered his services and was hired in 2018.
Chabot served until late 2019, when after another search the city hired the recently departed Daniel Hofman.
Perry said the scoring sheets are useful, however, and on Nov. 24 councilors agreed.
Perry, whose 24-hour-a-week work as an interim is set to conclude on Jan. 13, also told the councilors they should be able to quickly focus on a few of the candidates.
“There aren’t 17 that are going to be the next city manager,” he said. “The score sheets are going to narrow it down quite a bit.”
