Two area girls capture top spots in alpine championship

HANCOCK — Rice Memorial senior and Ferrisburgh resident Katie Cutting made it back-to-back titles in both the slalom and giant slalom at Thursday’s high school alpine girls’ state championship meet, hosted by Middlebury Union High School at the Middlebury College Snow Bowl.
Vergennes junior Greta Krahn took second behind Cutting in the GS and was seventh in the slalom.
Rutland won the team competition with 109 points, ahead of Mount Mansfield (139) and Champlain Valley (160). Middlebury (381) was 15th.
Cutting posted solid margins. In the two-run slalom, her combined time was 1:14.47, well ahead of Rutland’s Caitlin Bliss in second (1:17.77). Krahn’s seventh-place time was 1:21.36.
In the one-run GS, Cutting won in 55.52, with Krahn at 56.78, almost a second ahead of the third-place finisher.
Skiing for MUHS were seniors Alex Clarisse, Amanda Galenkamp and Alex Sears, and freshman Eleanor Eagan. Clarisse ran well in the GS, according to MUHS athletic director Sean Farrell, but was slowed in the slalom when she missed a gate and had to backtrack. Another MUHS skier, senior Emma Nordmeyer, was injured and could not participate.
Their results were:
GS: Clarisse, 14th, 1:01.02; Galenkamp, 38th, 1:04.69; Sears, 45th, 1:05.95; Eagan, 66th, 1:13.44.
SLALOM: Clarisse, 47th, 1:38.62; Sears, 53rd, 1:43.87; Eagan, 72nd, 2:01.87; Galenkamp, did not finish.
