Terriers take down Mount Abe football

BELLOWS FALLS — Host Bellows Falls on Friday defeated the Mount Abraham Union High School football team, 31-6, a Division II result that let the Terriers improve to 2-0 and dropped the Eagles to 0-2.
The Terriers opened the game with Chris McKeen’s 85-yard kick return. BF quarterback Zac Streeter ran 76 yards on 16 carries with two touchdowns, and McKeen tacked on a two-yard TD run.
Mount Abe coach Lee Hodsden said the Eagles were able to move the ball offensively, and senior tailback Ryan Paquin picked up 165 yards on 22 attempts, including a late 23-yard touchdown.
However, Hodsden said, the Eagles continue to hurt themselves with miscues, including committing penalties, lining up incorrectly, missing assignments and turning the ball over.
He said the Eagles, promoted this year up to D-II from D-III, must cut down on those errors.
“We cannot make these mistakes at this level and expect to be successful,” Hodsden said.
On the bright side, he said, “kids played their hearts out and gave a great effort,” and he was particularly pleased with the work of offensive linemen Broc Clark, Kyle Pearsall, Matt Mullin, Jack Eisenhower, Josh Roscoe and Bradley Sturtevant in opening holes for his backs in the running game.
Defensively, Hodsden said Eisenhower, Wyatt Gracie, Jeb Hodsden, Trevon Smith (who picked off a pass), Sturtevant, Mullin and Devon Kimball fared well.
Hodsden is hopeful that what he said is continued hard work will start to pay off, although high-scoring Fair Haven will pose a tough challenge in Bristol at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
“As a coaching staff are very pleased with the effort these boys give in the practices and games,” he said. “We just need to cut down on the mistakes on both sides of the ball.”
