Opinion: Many made career center’s boat a big success
Many thanks for your excellent coverage and photos regarding the trapping boat class at the Hannaford Career Center (Monday, Jan. 18, edition).
Overlooked in the coverage is the information that the class is a partnership amongst the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History and the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center, together with boatbuilder and boat historian Douglas Brooks. The class is being funded by a grant of $3,500 from the Patrick Foundation and a grant of $1,200 from the Regatta for Lake Champlain, both administered by the Henry Sheldon Museum of Middlebury.
The class supports the longtime mission for the Henry Sheldon Museum to advance the study of Middlebury, Addison County, and mid-Lake Champlain history. The Hannaford students learned history through oral interviews and crafting a replica of a Lake Champlain trapping boat. Perhaps future careers as historians or boatbuilders await the students.
