Like a few others in Middlebury village, Dottie Nelson has left a portion of the back yard unmowed to help pollinators. On a recent evening, Nelson was reading on the porch and looked up to see this beautiful lady grazing in the pollinator patch. She was very calm and stayed for about 10 minutes before moving on. Seven Northland Job Corps students and their instructor put their skills to work this week at Case Street Cemetery, trimming, pruning and raising the canopy as part of phase one of the cemetery’s upgrade project. Their efforts not only help maintain the grounds, they also move the students closer to job placement or advanced training. The second phase, scheduled for next year, involves fixing and cleaning the headstones. Anyone interested in volunteering can learn more by attending the Case Street Cemetery Association’s meeting at the cemetery on Monday, August 17 at 6:30 p.m. Photo from Carol Wood

EVERY TIME WE walked by the bird nest on the side of our Middlebury garage, Mama Robin would fly from the nest, so we suspected she might be sitting on something. On July 12, we got a ladder, took a look and found three beautiful blue eggs. Seemed pretty late in the season to be incubating eggs, but we looked it up and robins can hatch deep into July. So it wasn’t surprising on July 23 when we peeked into the nest and saw this fluffy brood of babies. Independent photos/John S. McCright
