VUHS girls’ soccer falls in OT

VERGENNES — The Division III Vergennes Union High School girls’ soccer team on Tuesday dropped an overtime game to D-II title contender, Rice, 1-0.
In other action on Tuesday, Middlebury hosted Mount Abraham; see story on Page 1B. Otter Valley was set to entertain Green Mountain Union on Wednesday after the deadline for the print edition.
Teams will play their final regular season games late this week, and the Vermont Principals’ Association will announce playoff pairings on Monday. Depending on results, Mount Abe in D-II and both VUHS and OV in D-III could host playoff games.
At VUHS on Tuesday Alex Dostie’s goal in the eighth minute gave Rice (8-2-3) the victory. Rice goalie Ashton Mathews made four saves, and Kate Gosliga stopped six shots as the Commodores dropped to 5-5-2.
VUHS should be able to lock down a first-round D-III home game by defeating winless Missisquoi on the road on Friday.
