ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police late last month arrested a Hyde Park man at a Ferrisburgh car dealership and cited him for driving under the influence and several drug possession charges.

On Feb. 23 at a little before 11:30 p.m., troopers spotted a vehicle that was reported to have been driven erratically in the Auto Creek parking lot in Ferrisburgh. Police identified the driver as James C. Caldwell, 55, of Hyde Park. While speaking to Caldwell, troopers observed indicators of impairment and screened Caldwell for DUI.

Eventually, state police cited Caldwell for driving under the influence of drugs. After getting a warrant, police searched Caldwell’s truck and said they found 55 grams of methamphetamine, 3 grams of powdered cocaine, a small quantity of rock cocaine, and a small quantity of heroin. They cited him for possession of those drugs, too.

Troopers were assisted by Vergennes police.

Meanwhile, at the same Feb. 23 incident, police identified a passenger in Caldwell’s vehicle as James E. Gawrys, 53, of Colchester. Troopers determined that there was an active warrant out for Gawrys’s arrest for failure to appear stemming from a DUI charge. Police arrested Gawrys without incident and took him to the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility, where he was held for lack of $500 bail.

In other recent activity, state police:

• Responded to a two-vehicle crash on Shoreham Whiting Road near the intersection with Route 30 in Whiting on Feb. 29 at a little after 7:30 a.m. Police said that a westbound 2011 Ford F-150 pickup and eastbound 2016 Chevy Sonic were both traveling at reasonable speeds when the pickup, driven by David Fernandez, 28, of Proctor, turned left into a private driveway without yielding to the Sonic, driven by Joan Litch, 70, of Whiting. 

Both vehicles were totaled in the crash, and both drivers were reported to be moderately injured and taken to Porter Hospital by ambulance.

Troopers, who were assisted by Middlebury EMS and the Whiting Fire Department, issued Fernandez a ticket for improper left turn.

• On March 1 just before 4 p.m. fielded a report of an abandoned blue 2000 Saab 9-3 with no license plate on Plank Road in New Haven. The following day, the vehicle was reported stolen from a Maple Street home in New Haven and driven to Plank road sometime between the evening of Feb. 29 and the afternoon of Friday, March 1.
