MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury is in the market for a new treasurer to succeed incumbent Jackie Sullivan, who resigned recently due to health reasons.

Sullivan was first elected Middlebury town treasurer in March 2006, and quickly established herself as a congenial, hardworking and meticulous member of the municipal workforce.

Sadly, Sullivan suddenly took ill in late December of 2021. While she’s made health gains and had hoped to resume her duties, Sullivan recently and regretfully tendered her resignation.

She began working for the town in July 2002 as an assistant to Middlebury Town Clerk Ann Webster. After six months in that role, she took a job as the town’s director of financial services. Then, in 2006, she began her lengthy run as treasurer.

“She was very dedicated and detail-oriented,” Webster said of Sullivan and her work ethic. “She’s definitely given it her all.”

Sullivan’s colleagues — including Deb Stevens and Nicholas Gill — have provided a steadying presence within the treasurer’s office in their boss’s absence.

Meanwhile, the Middlebury selectboard is inviting local, qualified residents to apply for the treasurer’s position. The board will appoint someone to fill the job until March 7, 2023 (the next Town Meeting Day), when the treasurer’s post will be on the election ballot. Webster said Sullivan leaves big shoes to fill.

“It’s a big hit for the town,” she said of Sullivan’s departure.
