TERRENCE K. ‘TIGER’ RYAN

SOUTH BURLINGTON — Terrence K. “Tiger” Ryan, 84, passed away peacefully at his home in South Burlington, Vt., June 18, 2026.

Born on June 25, 1941, in Rutland, Vt., Terry was raised in Springfield by his loving parents, John and Mary Ryan. He graduated from the University of Maine and built a career in agriculture before later becoming a tax preparer in Middlebury, Vt. Terry was a passionate advocate for preserving Vermont’s agricultural heritage and a dedicated supporter of land use efforts that protected the state’s working farms.

Throughout his life, Terry was known for his unwavering commitment to helping others and giving back to his community. He dedicated countless hours as a member of the 4-H Board and the Middlebury Rotary Club, and as a volunteer at Addison County Field Days, Green Up Day events, and Merry Mulch. For many years, he volunteered as a referee for local high school football and basketball games, becoming a familiar face to generations of student-athletes who knew him as the official with the whistle, a fair call, and an encouraging smile.

Each December, Terry embraced one of his favorite traditions. Trading his everyday attire for a red suit, white beard, and a sack full of toys, he became Santa Claus, visiting families, retirement homes, and community events throughout the area. He treasured the opportunity to spread joy and create lasting memories, especially for children and older adults. It was one of the many ways he quietly demonstrated his selflessness, and love for bringing happiness to others.

Terry will be remembered as a kind, giving and hardworking man who found joy in honest work and caring for the outdoors. Whether he was mowing the lawn, cutting brush, shoveling stone, or tackling the next yard project, he took great pride in staying busy and lending a helping hand whenever it was needed. His strong work ethic, quiet generosity, and willingness to serve others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Terry is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Sally Ryan; his loving children, Gery Ryan and his partner Marilyn, Terry Ryan and his wife Pauline, John Ryan, and Sara Kruk and her husband, Josh; and his cherished grandchildren, Alexandra, Colby, Isana, Dewi, Dina, Kelcie and Kayla, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He is also survived by his sisters, Joan Bishop of New Hampshire and Jean Ryan of Massachusetts.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Mary Ryan, and his brother, Hugh Ryan.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kayla’s Directory, 416 Phillip Lane, Shelburne VT 05482 in honor of Terry’s lifelong commitment to helping others and strengthening the community he so deeply loved.
