Middlebury town email is hacked
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police received a report from a municipal official on July 22 that someone had hacked into the town of Middlebury’s email system and had then tried to convince a person to transfer a “large amount of money” to them.
Police said no money transfer took place, but the town quickly sent out an advisory about the hack and attempts to use the town email address as a scam.
The advisory reads: “A town email account was hacked that sent out spam links to community members that contained a link that requires you to enter email credentials in order to access the document. If you did click the link, you should immediately change your passwords. If you ever are unsure if a link from the town is legitimate, please call the sender of the email, or call the town offices at 802-458-8001.
