Letter to the editor: Judges weigh in on Trump lawsuits
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the Trump administration. Is it a waste of taxpayer dollars, defending against these? Is it a witch hunt? What do judges appointed by Republicans think of all it all? What do they say during the hearings?
Here are quotes about the Trump administration, by judges appointed by Ronald Reagan:
“I’ve been on the bench for over four decades. I can’t remember another case where the question presented is as clear as this one. This is a blatantly unconstitutional order.” — John C. Coughenour
“This is a path of perfect lawlessness, one that courts cannot condone.” — J. Harvie Wilkinson III
Here are quotes about the Trump administration, by judges appointed by George W. Bush:
“It punishes and seeks to silence speech at the very center of the First Amendment.” — John D. Bates
“There is no doubt this retaliatory action chills speech and legal advocacy, or that it qualifies as a constitutional harm.” — Richard J. Leon
“We are confronted again with the efforts of the executive branch to set aside the rule of law in pursuit of its goals.” — Roger L. Gregory
“The executive order contradicts the text of the 14th Amendment and the century-old untouched precedent that interprets it.” —Joseph N. Laplante
“To hold otherwise would be to bless the president’s obvious attempt to exercise power beyond that granted to him by the Constitution.” — Reggie B. Walton
Here are quotes about the Trump administration, by judges appointed by Donald Trump:
“Defendants have provided no evidence, or even any specific allegations, as to how Cristian, or any other class member, poses a threat to public safety.” — Stephanie A. Gallagher
“That argument is nonsensical.” — Lewis J. Liman
“The government asks the court to overlook the simplest, most logical explanation for what happened. The court declines.” — Mary S. McElroy
These quotes are from The New York Times. The Times doesn’t cover everything I think they should, and their opinions section leans left, but their facts are accurate according to ratings by a balanced panel.
These quotes prove that Republican judges have found Trump’s actions unconstitutional, illegal, against even the freedoms guaranteed in the First Amendment.
How many of these judges have been overruled by the Supreme Court on any ruling they have made since January 20? Zero.
What are we going to do about a president who thinks he doesn’t have to follow the Constitution?
