Vermont State Police Log: Two local drivers cited for DUI

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police cited local men for drunken driving in two separate incidents in the past week — one in which the driver crashed his car.

On Jan. 9 at around 5 p.m., troopers responded to a one-car crash on Route 74 in Shoreham. Police said that the driver of the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander that slid off a snowy road, whom they identified as Alan Byrnes, 35, of Shoreham, sustained minor injuries.

While speaking with Byrnes, troopers said they detected indicators of impairment and took him into custody. Police cited him for driving under the influence. A traffic ticket is also pending, according to police.

In a separate incident the next dauy at around 8:45 p.m., a trooper stopped a driver following an alleged traffic violation on Little Chicago Road, near Hawkins Road in Ferrisburgh. The trooper said believed the driver, identified as Chad H. Steady, 50, of Ferrisburgh, to be intoxicated. The trooper ended cited Steady for DUI, second offense, while also issuing him three traffic tickets, including for misuse of number plates. Altogether, the tickets carried fines of $400 — and that’s separate from any penalty for drunken driving.

In other recent activity, troopers:

  • On Jan. 3, at aropund 10 p.m., stopped a vehicle driven by Ronald Real Jr., 51, of Orwell on Route 7 near Tuppers Crossing in Ferrisburgh and cited him for driving with a criminally suspended license.
  • On Jan. 7 at around 5 p.m., responded to a two-vehicle crash on Bristol Road in Monkton during a light snowfall. Police said Chase Messner, 28, of Ripton, had stopped to help another driver who had traveled off the roadway when a 2020 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Frances McDowell, 38, of Weybridge wasn’t able to slow down and subsequently rear-ended Messner’s 2014 Subaru Forrester. Both vehicles sustained substantial damage and were considered totaled by police. Both drivers were evaluated by the Bristol Rescue Squad. VSP was assisted by the Monkton Fire Department.

Police said they ticketed McDowell for driving too fast for conditions.

  • On Jan. 8 at around 3:30 p.m., investigated a two-car crash on Route 22A near West Road in Panton. Troopers reported that a 16-year-old driver had failed to stop when the car in front stopped to turn left into a private driveway and a crash resulted. A passenger in the teen’s car was taken to Porter Hospital with what police described as “moderate injuries.”

The crash totaled the 16-year-old’s car and netted a traffic ticket for following too closely.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the Ferrisburgh Fire Department and Vergennes Area Rescue Squad.

  • On Jan. 8 at 11:45 p.m., were dispatched to a report of a 911 hangup call at a home on Carr Road in Addison. After investigating, police reported that Alejandro Hernandez, 28, of Addison, “engaged in a physical altercation with a family member and placed them in fear of bodily injury.” Police cited Hernandez for first-degree aggravated domestic assault and lodged him at the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Center.
  • On Jan. 10 at 6 p.m., were notified that a 16-year-old Monkton girl had run away from home. Police published a photo of the teen and her car, and a little after midnight on Jan. 12, police reported the girl had been located.
  • On Jan. 13, announced that they had again cited Michael Kenyon, 47, of Vergennes, for home improvement fraud. On Jan. 4, a Charlotte man complained to state police that he’d hired Kenyon through Valley Pool and Spa Service LLC to provide pool servicing. Allegedly, Kenyon received an upfront payment for the pool servicing and weekly maintenance for several months, but never completed the work. State police had cited Kenyon in similar circumstances multiple times during the past four months.
  • On Jan 13, at around 7 p.m., responded to a report of a family fight in Bristol. Police allege 43-year-old Derek Estey of Bristol caused bodily injury to a household member, and they cited him for domestic assault.
