Boys’ hoop: OV keeps rolling
ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball action between Jan. 8 and Tuesday, Otter Valley kept rolling by winning twice, including at Vergennes; Mount Abraham won once in three tries, including two games decided in the final seconds; and Middlebury dropped a pair of outings to top Division II teams.
MUHS also visited OV on Tuesday as a tough scheduling stretch continued; see story on Page 1B.
OV-VUHS
On Oct. 9, the Otters improved to 7-1 by defeating the host Commodores, 59-47. OV started strong and led by 14 points at the half. The Otters mounted a balanced attack, with Logan Letourneau (15 points), Drew Pelkey (13 points), and Brody Lathrop and Connor Denis (12 points apiece) all reaching double figures.
The Commodores saw a four-game winning streak snapped and their record fall to 4-3. Ryker Mosehauer led VUHS with a game-high 20 points, and Ryan Wright scored 14.
The Commodores were also scheduled to visit Peoples on Wednesday after deadline for this issue.
On Saturday, the Otters crunched host Bellows Falls, 72-34, to improve to 8-1. The Otters took a 31-9 lead after one period and were never challenged. Lathrop led OV with 17 points, followed by 11 from Lucas Politano and 10 from Letourneau.
EAGLES
On Jan. 8, visiting Randolph rallied past the host Eagles for a 51-50 victory, their second victory of the winter over Mount Abe. The Eagles led by 37-31 entering the fourth quarter, but the Ghosts took the lead, 48-47, on a late Trent Spinks hoop and then iced the win from the free throw line. Eli Messier (16 points) and Shea Fontanella (15 points) lead Randolph in scoring.
For the Eagles, Charlie Germon’s 20 points led all scorers, Hayden Lutz scored 10, and Jake Prouty added eight points.
On Jan. 10, it was the Eagles’ turn to win a nailbiter, 40-39, at Mount St. Joseph. Lutz sank two free throws with seven seconds left to erase a 39-38 Mountie lead and give the Eagles the victory. MSJ led at the half, 21-17, but the Eagles carried a one-point lead into the fourth quarter and protected it with good foul shooting. Germon led the Eagles with 11, and Lutz and Cooper Cook each scored eight. Gavin Treanor led MSJ with 14 points.
On Tuesday, host Fair Haven pulled away from a 33-27 halftime lead to defeat the Eagles, 71-49. Phil Bean had a big night for the Slaters as they improved to 6-3, scoring 34 points, and Max Kyhill was next with 15.
Leading the Eagles (3-4) in scoring were Lutz (14 points), Germon (nine) and Kyle Johnston (eight).
TIGERS
On Jan. 8, visiting Fair Haven defeated the Tigers, 48-35, breaking the game open in the second half.
Kyhill led the Slaters with 10 points, while Bean and Sam Kyhill finished with nine points each.
Taylor Altemose led MUHS with 13 points, and Cooke Riney scored 10.
On Saturday, another one of D-II’s top teams, Hartford, toppled the Tigers, 77-47. Four Hurricanes reached double figures, led by Noah Jenks with16 points and Joey Gardner with 15.
Riney paced the Tigers with 15, and Kyle Stearns chipped in 10. The Tigers dropped to 2-5 heading into Tuesday’s game in Brandon against the 8-1 Otters.
