In girls’ hoop, Mt. Abe & Vergennes win; Tigers split

ADDISON COUNTY — In area high school girls’ basketball action late last week and earlier this week, Mount Abraham made the most noise by picking up three victories. Vergennes won its only outing, while Middlebury split two road games heading into a Saturday game at Otter Valley. The Otters were otherwise idle.

EAGLES

On Dec. 30 the Eagles eased by host Montpelier, 47-31, with a balanced offensive output. Louisa Painter led Mount Abe with 11 points, and Mackenzie Griner scored nine. Hazel Guillmette helped the Eagles across the board with seven points, eight steals and five assists, and Lauren Cousino added five points. Regan Walke led the 0-3 Solons with 12 points.

On Jan. 2, the Eagles avenged an earlier 29-point loss at Fair Haven by defeating the host Slaters, 34-28. The Eagles took the lead midway through the first period and held off the Slaters the rest of the way, including hitting key free throws in the fourth quarter after Fair Haven sliced their lead to one point.

The Eagle defense held the Slaters to fewer than half the points they surrendered in a 61-32 loss on Dec. 23 at Fair Haven. Offensively, Painter led the Eagles with 13 points, followed by Griner with eight and Gen Forand with six. Kate Hadwen scored 14 for the 3-2 Slaters, the defending Division II champions.

On Monday, Mount Abe prevailed in a defensive battle with host Burr & Burton, 30-19. Griner scored 11 points to lead the Eagle attack, while Maeven Virgilio scored eight for the Bulldogs. The Eagles have swept the season series with BBA.

Mount Abe improved to 5-1, with all six games on the road. The Eagles’ first home game comes on Friday, when they’re scheduled to host Otter Valley.

COMMODORES

On Jan. 2, the Commodores improved to 4-1 by overwhelming visiting Northfield, 81-12, in their only action of the past week. Ashtin Stearns paced the rout by scoring 20 of her 28 points in the first half. Ava Francis and Kendra Jackson each tossed in 14 points, and Summer Gosliga added 11.

TIGERS

On Dec. 30, host Harwood defeated the Tigers, 47-34. Highlander Eloise Lilly paced her team with 23 points.

Louisa Orten led the Tigers with 15 points.

On Jan. 2, the Tigers knocked off D-I host St. Albans, 54-38, to even their record at 2-2 heading into the Saturday game at OV. The Comets led by 24-19 at the half, but the Tigers dominated the second half, particularly a fourth quarter during which they outscored St. Albans by 17-5. Orten scored 20; Solstice Binder returned after missing two games with an injury and scored 16 — 12 in the second half; and Lexi Whitney finished with 12 points.

Emma Harrison paced the Comets with 12 points, and Jade Garceau scored 11.
