Middlebury Police Log: Two taken into protective custody

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police took two drunken people into protective custody following their investigation of a property-related dispute on Mill Street on Aug. 12 at around 4:45 p.m.

In addition to conducting daily foot patrols downtown to monitor members of the local houseless community, Middlebury police last week:

  • Responded to a complaint about a campfire under the Cross Street bridge on Aug. 12.
  • Warned a youth about driving an ATV on Three Mile Bridge Road on Aug. 12.
  • Met on Aug. 12 with the landlord of a Valley View Drive apartment complex who was concerned about juveniles playing with airsoft electric guns on the property.
  • Served a no-trespass order on a person believed to have stolen merchandise from a Court Street Extension business on Aug. 13.
  • Received a report on Aug. 13 about a potential sexual assault occurring in Middlebury. An investigation is ongoing, police said.
  • Investigated a bad-check report at an Exchange Street business on Aug. 13.
  • Connected a local woman with mental health resources on Aug. 13.
  • Helped an East Middlebury resident search for a missing dog on Aug. 14.
  • Helped a disoriented man get back to his Washington Street home on Aug. 14.
  • Arrested Ashley I. Pelkey, 36, of Bristol on two outstanding warrants on Hunt Farm Road on Aug. 14.
  • Arrested and cited Michael Lackard, 42, of Salisbury on an outstanding arrest warrant on Aug. 14.
  • Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS in evaluating patients at the Abbey Pond trailhead and at the Charter House Emergency Shelter on Aug. 15.
  • Received a report of suspicious activity on North Pleasant Street on Aug. 15.
  • Helped connect a local man to mental health support on Aug. 15.
  • Assisted state police at a DUI checkpoint on Route 7 on Aug. 16.
  • Were informed of the alleged theft of a vehicle from a Route 7 South dealership on Aug. 16.
  • Checked on the welfare of a local girl who was experiencing a mental health crisis in the Jackson Lane area on Aug. 16.
  • Responded to an alleged assault at McDonald’s Restaurant on Aug. 17. Police said the matter is under investigation.
  • Received a report on Aug. 17 that someone had installed a padlock on a portable toilet in the Bakery Lane area.
  • Checked on a reported water main break on Woodbridge Lane on Aug. 17.
  • Moved along a homeless person who had been sleeping on the steps of a Main Street business at around 3 p.m. on Aug. 18.
  • Responded to a dispute among neighbors at the Briarwood Apartments on Aug. 18.
  • Assisted Vermont State Police at the scene of an accident on Route 7 in Salisbury on Aug. 18.
  • Assisted Porter Hospital staff with an aggressive patient on Aug. 18.
  • Investigated an untimely death report at an Airport Road home on Aug. 18. Police identified the deceased as 69-year-old Avdo Harambasic and found no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
  • Responded to a noise complaint at 97 Court St. at around 2:48 a.m. on Aug. 18. Police said the people in the residence agreed to quiet down.
