Fernande “Fern” Cloutier, 98, of Middlebury

FERNANDE “FERN” CLOUTIER

MIDDLEBURY — Someone who loves the Lord is now with him: Fernande “Fern” Cloutier, age 98, passed peacefully on Sept. 3, 2021, at Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center, in Middlebury.

Fern was born in Moose Creek, Ontario, Canada on June 24, 1923. She was the daughter of Aime’ and Marguerite (Branchaud) Lalonde. She grew up in Moose Creek, where she received her education. On June 11, 1946, she married Gerald Cloutier at Our Lady of The Angels Catholic Church in Moose Creek. Nov. 12, 1947, they moved to Salisbury, where they owned and operated a farm until the spring of 1969. They afterward built a home in Middlebury.

Mr. Cloutier predeceased her in Dec. 1987. Earlier they had owned and operated an apartment house on Benedict Lane, which she continued operating until Oct. 2004. She was a communicant at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Fern loved to help others. She enjoyed good health her entire life and remained physically active into her late nineties. Her hobbies were crocheting, knitting, sewing and reading. She had also been a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, volunteered at Porter Medical Center at the information desk, and performed various clerical tasks throughout the hospital. She also volunteered at Red Cross Blood Drives and volunteered at Helen Porter Rehabilitation and Nursing. She would assist the Parish Priest with communion. She also knitted hats and mittens for local elementary school children and sewed turbans for cancer survivors, and was an R.S.V.P volunteer.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane C. Euber of Orwell; grandchildren Eric Euber, Kelli Euber Blair and her husband Richard, and James Euber; and great-grandchildren Serena, Jesse Lynn, Dakota and Haley. In addition to her husband, she was also predeceased by her son-in-law Alan “Allie” Euber in 2018.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, Sept. 10, at 1 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Rev. Luke Austin, pastor will be the celebrant. The graveside committal service and burial will follow, in the family lot at St. Mary’s Cemetery. For those wishing to attend, please wear a face covering.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to Palliative Care, Porter Medical, Office of Development, for Palliative Care, 115 Porter Drive, Middlebury, VT 05753; or to Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.◊
