WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Vergennes Champs are now state champs.

At the Upper Valley Aquatic Center this past weekend the Little City’s summer swim team finished first among 21 teams at the Vermont Swim Association’s State Championship Meet.

After being slotted in the largest of five divisions because of the team’s strong numbers, the Champs outscored the two large Chittenden County teams in Division I by racking up 1,820.5 points.

Edge Swim Club (1,751.5) came in second, and Burlington Tennis Club (1,625.5) took third.

The Champs won 19 events as they added the Vermont title to their undefeated Champlain Valley Swim League season — the team’s first since the 1970s, according to a former coach.

The Champs had finished second in the unofficial CVSL league meet, at which they were outpointed by Burlington Tennis Club.

All the Champs winning races were between the ages of 7 and 12. Flint Crary (10) and Will Clark (12) led the way with three wins apiece. Paul Foley (7) and Aurora Foley (10) added two victories each.

Ayla Kittredge (10), Khanlen Ouimette (11), and 12-year-olds Clark Clary, Adrienne Smits and Isabella Romond each touched the wall first once.

The Champs added four relay victories, two in age 8 and under races, one in a U-10 race, and two in U-12 races. The team’s depth showed when two Champ teams scored valuable points in single relay races.

Many other Champs scored points for the team with scoring finishes, a number of them in multiple events. Key contributors included Connor Husk, with three second-place results, and Kendall Kittredge, with two seconds.

The Middlebury Marlins, Vergennes’s friendly local rivals, also prevailed in their group; see story on Page 1B. Many members of both teams swim together in the winter.

Champs team vice president Jessica James said in an email the results made for a happy weekend all the way around.

“The Champs are thrilled!!! We are so happy Midd won their division as well!” James wrote.

Champs scoring points for their team with top-18 finishes in individual races or top-nine results in relays were:
