Gunfire through apartment door injures Middlebury man; suspect held for attempted murder
MIDDLEBURY — Police on Saturday afternoon took into custody a 20-year-old Middlebury man who they said shot another man through an apartment door earlier in the afternoon.
The 22-year-old man who was shot was undergoing surgery at UVM Medical Center early Saturday evening. Police did not release the victim’s name.
Dominick Ekroos faces a charge of attempted murder; other charges are pending.
A man went to an apartment at 65 Court St., a white building on the east side of the street between Mary Hogan Elementary and Middlebury Union High School, around 2 p.m. and knocked on the victim’s door, a resident of that building told Middlebury police. The resident said the victim opened his door and the man, apparently Ekroos, pointed a semiautomatic handgun at the victim and demanded property.
After the victim closed the door, the assailant fired twice through the door, striking the victim in the upper body, police recount. The assailant fled.
The victim was taken to Porter Hospital and then tranfered to UVMMC.
Middlebury police and Vermont State Police located Ekroos around 3:15 p.m. and took him into custody.
Middlbury police said the general public was not in danger. Their investigation is ongoing.
