Middlebury skiers win at second-straight carnival

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Middlebury College ski team this past weekend won its second straight carnival, this time taking home the crown at Williams. The Panthers finished with 855 points, followed by Vermont (843) and Dartmouth (752).
Justin Alkier, Tim Gavett and Erik Arvidsson picked up alpine wins, and the Panther women’s Nordic team posted victories on both days. Nordic competitions were held in Lake Placid, N.Y., while the alpine events took place at Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Mass. Middlebury is off until hosting its own carnival on Feb. 28 and 29.
On Saturday Alkier won the slalom for his third victory of season, covering the two runs in 1:33.9. Arvidsson placed fourth in 1:35.2, and Gavett was sixth (1:35.4).
Lucia Bailey led the Panther women in the slalom by placing third in 1:38.3. Emma Hall was ninth (1:40), followed by Nina Reichhelm in 18th (1:41.1).
The Panther women’s team of Alexandra Lawson, Sophia Laukli and Annika Landis prevailed in the three-by-five-kilometer relay in 34:34, 1:06 better than their nearest opponent.
The Panther men’s team of Peter Wolter, Sam Hodges and Willson Moore came in seventh in 36:29.
On Friday the women’s Nordic squad picked up a win in the 10K classic with three finishers in the top eight. Lawson paced the group by taking second in 27:56. Sophia Laukli was fourth in 28:43, and Landis finished eighth (28:55).
Wolter finished fourth (24:37) in the men’s 10K classic, followed by Hodges in 12th (25:12) and Hans Pessel in 29th (25:50).
On the slopes Gavett and Arvidsson tied for the win in the giant slalom, both covering the two runs in 1:42.9. Michel Macedo finished fifth in 1:43.1.
Reichhelm paced the Panther women by taking fifth in 1:47.5. Katie Utter was seventh in 1:48, and Bailey took 14th in 1:48.9.
