Middlebury Community Players auditions are this week
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Community Players will hold auditions for their February 2020 show, Lillian Groag’s “The Ladies of the Camellias,” on Monday, Dec. 2, and Wednesday, Dec. 4., at Town Hall Theater. Registration for the auditions begins at 6:30 p.m., with auditions beginning promptly at 7 p.m. The production, which will run Feb. 6-9 at town Hall Theater, is directed by Kevin Commins.
“The Ladies of the Camellias” is a farce based on the imagined meeting of the world’s two greatest actresses — Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse — in 1897 Paris at Bernhardt’s theater. The clash between these two powerful divas is complicated when a Russian anarchist arrives to hold the two theater companies hostage until the French police release his compatriots. What results is a witty examination of theater, politics, society, ego and art.
Auditioners only need to come for one of the evenings and will be asked to read sample scenes from the script. Characters speak in French, Italian, or Russian accents, depending on the role; auditioners are encouraged to read with the appropriate accent.
Rehearsals will be on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. A perusal script will be available at the Town Hall Theater Box Office, at 802-382-9222, open Monday-Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.
