Janet Lucia (Roberts) Price, 89, Vergennes
VERGENNES — Janet Lucia (Roberts) Price, 89, passed away peacefully of natural causes at Ringer’s Home Care in Vergennes on Aug. 16, 2019.
She was born on June 2, 1930, in Barnard, Vermont, the only child of Linwood Belknap Roberts and Lena (Blood) Roberts. She grew up in Barnard and graduated from Whitcomb High School in Bethel in 1949 as class valedictorian. She then attended and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She married George H. Price on Oct. 10, 1953, and together they raised three children: Deborah, Stephanie and Timothy. They traveled to Fort Bragg, Ga., Fort Lewis, Wash., and returned to settle in Jacksonville, Vermont.
In 1963, they moved to Vergennes and then to Ferrisburgh.
Following her divorce in 1970, she returned to UVM, where she received her Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences in 1971 and was then employed by the Addison Northwest School District in Vergennes as a Speech and Language Pathologist until 1993 when she retired.
After retirement, she remained connected with the school district, children and families through the Early Education Outreach Program and acted as liaison between the community and the Early Education program. She was affectionately known as “the bag lady” or the “Barney lady” as she delivered handmade bags of materials and supplies to daycare providers in the district.
Janet had her dream house built in 1988 and became a permanent resident of Vergennes. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and served as president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society for two years.
Janet loved to drive! She was an avid member of the Vermont 251 Club and traveled the state of Vermont taking pictures of churches and visiting all the small towns with her dear friend Jean Bodette. In her spare time, she drove farm tractors for area farmers during their busy season and worked/helped at Fisher Flower Farm with Kenneth Estey during his busy season each year.
She also enjoyed knitting, made many knit articles of clothing, attended craft fairs, and ran Stone Cellar Yarns out of her home. Janet was enthusiastic about bowling with her team and spent many years and hours traveling, bowling, winning recognitions and trophies, and just spending time with “her team.” Countless hours were spent over coffee and crossword puzzles with her long-time friend Barbara FitzGerald. She played bridge, worked on word-finds daily, wrote poetry for family and friends, dabbled in oil painting, made frequent trips to Bixby Library for books, and made weekly cookies for all her friends around town — all delivered with a smile and a hug. Janet also had a special gift for “water witching” (dowsing) and would spend hours looking for and always finding the perfect apple stick. She took great pleasure in finding an underground spring or water vein for friends and neighbors.
Janet was a member of the Vergennes Methodist Church and later became a member of the Vergennes Congregational Church.
Janet is survived by her children: Deborah Angier (Phillip), Stephanie Kilbride (Kevin), Timothy Price and wife Jackie (Tuminaro); her grandchildren: Justin Angier (Brigitte Husk), Ashley Angier (Thomas LaPorte), Tanner Price and wife Kelsey (Remick), Allyson Kilbride (Jonathan White), and Brian Kilbride and wife Maggie (Johnston); and her precious great-grandchildren, Juliette Angier, Evan Angier and Ariah LaPorte.
Special thanks go to Jim and Marlene Ringer and the staff of Ringer’s Home Care in Vergennes, the Addison County Home Health & Hospice personnel, and members of the Vergennes Congregational Church, and her many friends and neighbors. Their love and care for Mom was exceptional.
There will be no calling hours. Services for Janet will be held at the Congregational Church on Water Street in Vergennes on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. Refreshments at the church will follow. Interment will be scheduled at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ringer’s Home Care, 195 Green St., Vergennes, VT 05491, of Addison County Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 754, Middlebury, VT 05753. ◊
