VUHS cheerleaders vie at Vermont state meet

VERGENNES — Rutland County teams dominated the 2018 Vermont High School Cheerleading Championships, held on Saturday night at Vergennes Union High School.
Rutland prevailed in Division I with an overall competition best of 186, followed by Essex at 150 and Mount Anthony at 147.
The Commodore cheer squad, bumped back up to D-I this year after winning the D-II title on its home floor in 2017, scored 130 points.
Many experienced VUHS team members graduated at the same time the squad was moved to D-I. Unlike most other activities, cheerleading divisions, per Vermont Principals’ Association rules, are determined by participation and not by school enrollment.
In D-II Mill River rolled to victory with 179 points, followed by BFA-St. Albans (146) and Fair Haven (142). The Otter Valley and Mount Abraham squads did not compete this year.
