Otters are only winners in girls’ hoop

ADDISON COUNTY — Otter Valley won, but Mount Abraham, Vergennes came up short in girls’ basketball action late last week.
On Saturday the Otters rallied to defeat host West Rutland, 43-42, in overtime. The Otters trailed by 10 midway through the fourth quarter but got key points from Gabby Poalino to close the gap and then sent the game into overtime on Mary Kingsley’s buzzer-beating three-pointer. In overtime an Alia Edmunds free throw with 42 seconds snapped a 42-42 tie and helped give OV the win.
Poalino led OV with 12 points, while Kingsley scored 11 and Leah Pinkowski and Julia Eastman added seven and six, respectively.
The Otters are 3-6 not counting a scheduled Thursday home game vs. Hartford, results of which were not available despite attempts to seek information.
On Friday host North Country edged the Eagles, 42-39, as Falcons Kylie Wright (20) and Carley Giroux (19) combined for 39 points.
Emma Carter scored 19 and snared nine boards, and Jalen Cook scored eight for the Eagles (7-4).
On Friday host Winooski topped the Commodores, 54-34, behind 23 points and 11 rebounds from Spartan Lydia Nattress.
