Vermont State Police Log: Troopers respond to accidents, sexual assault charge and more

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police last week responded to two separate one-car crashes on Route 7 near Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh.
Troopers looked into the first incident on Jan. 2 at approximately 2:35 p.m. They identified that driver of a 2005 Volvo XC70 that crashed as 57-year-old Stephen Mackenzie of Port Henry, N.Y. While speaking with Mackenzie, troopers detected signs of impairment and screened him for driving under the influence.
Eventually, police arrested Mackenzie for suspicion of DUI-drug and driving with a suspended license. They also ticketed him for driving too fast for conditions and driving without insurance.
They lodged Mackenzie at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility for lack of $1,000 bail.
Police report that the Volvo was a total loss, but Mackenzie was not injured.
Separately, on Jan. 5 at around 9 p.m., state police in the New Haven barracks were notified that a car had crashed into a utility pole on Route 7 near Greenbush Road. Per the caller, there were no injuries in this crash.
Police report that Matthew Davis, 24, of Burlington lost control of the 2009 Honda Civic he was driving on the snow-covered highway as he was passing a vehicle that was turning right, and the Civic struck the power pole. Davis, the only person in the car, sustained minor bumps. Traffic was partially limited for several hours due to low power lines across the road.
Police ticketed Davis for driving too fast for the weather conditions.
In an unrelated incident, Vermont State Police last week charged Tyler Dunton, 24, of Middlebury with aggravated sexual assault based on a Dec. 10 incident in Cornwall.
Police allege that Dunton “engaged in a sexual act without consent, where the victim sustained a serious bodily injury as a result.”
State police detectives assigned to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigated the sexual assault complaint and obtained a warrant for Dunton’s arrest on Dec. 19.
On Jan. 4, members of the Windham County Sherriff’s Department found Dunton and took him into custody. Dunton was then arraigned in Vermont Superior Court’s Windham County Criminal Division in Brattleboro, where according to a state police press release he was ordered held without bail.
Back in Addison County on Thursday Jan. 4, state police troopers from the New Haven barracks assisted Sheriff Donald Keeler and the Addison County Sheriff’s Department when they executed an arrest warrant during a search warrant on a residence in East Middlebury.
At about 11:30 a.m. that day, Christopher Crowningshield was taken into custody on an arrest warrant from the Addison County Superior Court for failing to appear for a pre-trial conference. Police said Crowningshield refused to come out of his East Middlebury home after several attempts were made to contact him.
Police report that they knew Crowningshield was in the residence, so an entry team led by Sheriff Keeler and Lt. Peter Newton went in and found Crowningshield in the rear of the building.
The Middlebury Police Department and Middlebury Regional EMS ambulance services also assisted the sheriff’s department during the operation.
Meanwhile, Vermont State Police have announced that troopers from the New Haven barracks, along with other participating area law enforcement agencies in Addison County, will conduct a series of DUI checkpoints and focused saturation patrols throughout Addison County during the month of January.
The intent is to promote highway safety by identifying and removing impaired drivers and reducing impaired driving-related crashes.

Police said neither alcohol nor drugs were a factor in the collision. Both vehicles sustained minor damage, but no injuries were reported.
Police gave Terbeek a ticket for driving on the wrong side of the road.
•  On Jan. 4 at approximately 2:20 p.m. received a report that a vehicle had slid off the roadway on Delong Road in Cornwall.
