MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police responded on Dec. 12 to a report of a man with rope who had been peering over the Cross Street Bridge railing at around 10:15 a.m.
Police learned there was no danger: The man was conducting an Otter Creek water flow survey on behalf of the U.S. Geological Survey.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
•  Took to Porter Hospital a man who was experiencing a mental health crisis in the Lindale Circle area on Dec. 11.
•  Conducted a welfare check on a Water Street resident who had allegedly been drinking heavily on Dec. 11. Police said the woman was OK.
•  Investigated a reported verbal dispute between two people in Court Square on Dec. 11.
•  Connected a Middle Union High School student with officials at the Counseling Service of Addison County on Dec. 11.
•  Issued court diversion paperwork to an MUHS student found to be in possession of marijuana on Dec. 11.
•  Launched an investigation into an embezzlement complaint filed by an Exchange Street business on Dec. 11.
•  Assisted a person experiencing a mental health issues in the Munson Road area on Dec. 12.
•  Investigated a complaint of a snowmobile operating unsafely on Seymour Street on Dec. 12.
•  Collected a student who had walked away from Middlebury Union Middle School without permission on Dec. 12.
•  Gave a drunken man a ride to his Route 7 home on Dec. 12.
•  Helped a local woman who said she was being harassed by her ex-boyfriend on Dec. 12.
•  Took into protective custody a drunken woman who was found on Main Street on Dec. 14. Police took the woman to Porter Hospital.
•  Responded to a Court Street apartment on Dec. 14 to look into a report of an unwanted person.
•  Investigated a report of a vehicle leaving the scene of an accident on Cross Street on Dec. 14.
•  Responded to an accident in which a person sustained minor injuries on Washington Street on Dec. 14.
•  Received a report about a MUHS student having an unexcused absence on Dec. 14.
•  Investigated a report of a student carrying a knife on a school bus at MUMS on Dec. 14. School officials found and confiscated the knife, according to police.
•  Received a report on Dec. 15 that a wallet had been stolen from the ladies’ room at TJ Maxx off Court Street Extension.
•  Were informed of the theft of a bike from Mary Hogan Elementary School on Dec. 15.
•  Responded to a noise complaint in the North Pleasant Street neighborhood on Dec. 15.
•  Received a report about a child missing from a South Pleasant Street home on Dec. 15. Police said the child returned a short time after the call.
•  Issued winter parking ban tickets on College Street on Dec. 16.
•  Assisted Vermont State Police in the investigation of a single-car crash on Exchange Street on Dec. 16 that culminated in Thomas G. Case, 24, of New Haven being cited for driving under the influence of alcohol. State police alleged that Case had tried to run away from the scene of the Exchange Street accident. After taking Case into custody, state police took him to Porter Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained in the car crash.
•  Took a suicidal man to be evaluated at Porter Hospital on Dec. 17.
•  Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on Dec. 17.
•  Helped Porter Hospital officials with an uncooperative patient on Dec. 18.
